Fort Dodge’s Drake Ayala Wins Junior Freestyle Wrestling National Title

Drake Ayala went 6-0 to win the Junior men’s freestyle national championships in Fargo, North Dakota. He is Iowa’s 66th all-time Junior freestyle national champion, Iowa has the most of any state in the country. This is Ayala’s second freestyle national crown in the last three years — in 2017 he won a Cadet title before his freshman year.

Ayala told the Des Moines Register (quote) “I thought I wrestled really well,” Ayala said. “I got rid of a lot of the bad habits that I was used to, like getting down early and letting too many people in on my legs. I think those were two areas I improved on for this week, and that played a big factor in why I won.”
